A Yacht Club in Bolingbrook?

Yes, there once was a thriving Yacht Club in Bolingbrook.  Some old timers will tell you that is was started by Steve Dahl of radio fame and a Bolingbrook resident at the time (1978).  Let set the record straight - He didn't start the club, he only inspired it.  Steve used his lofty position of D.J. to belittle our lovely village and referred to it on air as "Beautiful Bolingbrook by the Sea".  One warm summer's eve the Butternut Brigade, a motley collection of neer do wells and rascals who lived on the east end of Butternut were sitting in the yard and drinking adult beverages.  During the course of the conversation it was decided that if were we living in Bolingbrook by the Sea, we deserved a Yacht Club.  Within mere minutes, or so it seemed, officers had been elected, a constitution had been written and a mascot had been named.  (The official mascont of the BBYC is the Pink Lawn Flamingo of which there are two varieties; Pinkus Plasticus Flamingus and the also extinct Pinkus Concretus Flamingus)  Since it was only a few weeks before the Pathways parade this hastily assembled club voted to introduce ourselves to the community at said parade.  Our hearty crew which included the Commodore, his lovely wife, Smokey, Annie, Dan, Barb, Peggy, Jackie and Tacky, as well as other assorted lubbers, set about building the "Fabulous Flying Flamingo" a yacht that became the standard for the ensuing regattas, making shirts, buy white hats and kazoos plus a procuring a proper Commodore's hat for the Commodore.  On the morning of the parade, we found that we had been assigned the spot immediately in front of the Coast Guide Auxiliary.  We found a certain humor in this, they did not.  The parade started, we marched past the judging stand displaying a full sword salute to Mayor Bob Bailey and the judges, while our kazoo chorus played the theme song, By the Sea, By the Sea, By the Bolingbrook Sea.  When the parade ended and the votes were counted the BBYC won 3rd place for matching group and we were happy.  Then Bernie, a lovely woman who was in charge of the parade and selecting the bricks for village hall, announced that the big trophy for the "unit that exemplified the spirit of the village" had been awarded by judges who were not from the village and probably had warped senses of humor.  That's when we realized that we had won and that we were now a legitimate force in Bolingbrook.  Next time, "Starting a 'Cornfield Regatta' and other things".
