Bolingbrook Prescription Drug Take Back Day

Get rid of your unwanted drugs safely at this event instead of trashing or flushing them.

BOLINGBROOK, IL — The Bolingbrook Police Department is holding a prescription drug take back day to help residents dispose of drugs safely. Expired and unused drugs are a safety issue, police say, and can lead to accidental poisoning, overdose and abuse.

It's unsafe to flush drugs down the toilet, because the chemicals within can contaminate waterways and lakes. Throwing them in the trash can lead to accidental ingestion, police say, as animals or kids can get in the trash.

So, the best thing to do is give them off to the authorities who know how to best dispose of them. Here's what you can bring:

  • expired prescription drugs
  • unwanted or unused prescription drug
  • over the counter drugs
  • patches
  • vitamins
  • syrups, ointments and creams

Here's what they won't accept at the take back event:

  • syringes and other sharp objects
  • injectable drugs
  • intravenous solutions
  • illicit drugs
  • oxygen containers and pressurized canisters
  • medical equipment

The Tuesday, March 27 event will be at the Levy Senior Center, 251 Canterbury Lane, in Bolingbrook and will run from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.
