Bolingbrook Resident Earns Master's Degree from Western Governors University

Bryan Mundt, a resident from Bolingbrook, has graduated from Western Governors University (WGU) with a Master of Science in Cybersecurity and Information Assurance (MSCIA). He traveled to Dallas to participate in the nonprofit, fully online university’s commencement ceremony, which was held Feb. 22 and celebrated the achievements of 13,000 graduates.
Mundt, who graduated with his master’s degree just six months after earning his Bachelor of Science in IT- Security Emphasis from WGU, began his educational journey over 20 years ago. After earning his GED, Mundt got a job in the IT field, with the goal of earning an associate degree. He enrolled in community college right away, but it wasn’t until 15 years later that he became serious about his education and completed his associate degree. His desire to further his education did not stop there, and Mundt found WGU after “test-driving” a few other universities that either didn’t have the cyber security program he was looking for or were too expensive.
“I finally found WGU by researching online schools,” he said. “At first, it looked too good to be true, but through further research and after speaking with an enrollment counselor, all my questions were answered. I knew I found the right school that fit into my lifestyle.”
WGU’s competency-based system allowed Mundt to accelerate through courses he had prior knowledge in from his career. This way, he was able to focus on learning the material needed to further his skills. Mundt was able to complete his MSCIA in just a few short months immediately following completion of his undergraduate degree.

“I’m incredibly proud of my accomplishments through WGU, and it has allowed me to gain additional confidence in my skills and my future.” Mundt said.
WGU offers more than 60 programs in IT, business, teacher education and health professions, including nursing. All programs are competency-based—a learning model that focuses on measuring learning rather than time spent in class. This model, along with online access to courses, study materials, and proctored assessments, means students are able to complete coursework on schedules that fit their lives—not driven by a syllabus or class schedules.
