Bolingbrook Students Advance in Spelling Bee

Three Humphrey students will advance to the Feb. 2 Valley View School District 365U Spelling Bee after winning their own grade level spelling bees at the Bolingbrook middle school Thursday.

The 8th grade champ is Juls Staggs who won by spelling “scum” in round 5 and “alchemy” for the victory. She also spelled dungaree, canary, mascara and guitar correctly. Kristian Arzola finished second by correctly spelling “gazelle” in round 4 to edge third place finisher Kayla Davis.

Samantha Welko won the 7th grade spelling bee by correctly spelling “nostril” in the 4th round after being right on yield, mentor and orchard. Cora Beach was second after she spelled “bandit” correctly. Judith Bediako earned third place following a spell-off with Kyara Chisholm that went six extra rounds.

The 6th grade winner was Haley Cushing who got “tutu” correct in round 3. She also was right on balcony and vampire. Second place went to Madyson Biehr who beat Cali Swinarski in a five round spell-off by spelling “mosque” properly.
