Bolingbrook Vehicle Stickers Won't Return With IKEA's Relocation: Village

The Mayor said IKEA's 27-acre property is owned by IKEA, and the Village looks forward to 'opening a dialogue' about property plans.

BOLINGBROOK, IL — After its announcement that IKEA will close its Bolingbrook location and relocate to Naperville in late 2027, Bolingbrook Mayor Mary Alexander-Basta said the Village looks forward to "opening a dialogue with the company
regarding its plans for the 27-acre property."

IKEA has been part of the Bolingbrook community since Sept. 2004, Alexander-Basta said.

On Tuesday, the retailer announced it will close its Bolingbrook location at the end of 2027, and will move to a smaller location in Naperville's Block 59.

The Bolingbrook store is 313,000 square feet, and the Naperville location will be 66,000 square feet. IKEA said the relocation decision is "part of our efforts to meet customers where they are."

Alexander-Basta said IKEA owns the 27-acre property in Bolingbrook, and no Village tax incentives were provided to IKEA when the company originally located in Bolingbrook.

"Today the Village is in a much different position than when IKEA opened its doors more than 22 years ago. Over the past two decades, the Village has continued to grow and diversify its commercial, industrial and employment base," Alexander-Basta said. "Today, Bolingbrook is home to a broad mix of retailers, restaurants, employers, and industries that contribute to a strong and diverse local economy."

In 2004, when IKEA came to town, Alexander-Basta said the "significant boost to the local economy and revenue it generated" allowed Bolingbrook to stop its local vehicle stickers.

The mayor said that the Village wants to reassure residents that it has no plans to reinstate the vehicle sticker.

"With IKEA’s plans now public, the Village looks forward to opening a dialogue with the company regarding its plans for the 27-acre property," Alexander-Basta said. "This prominent site along the I355 and Boughton Road corridor presents significant opportunities for its future, including potential redevelopment."
