Did You Know Your Smartphone Can Give Away Your Location?

Putting our kids' safety at risk with our smartphones!

Maybe I'm slow to hear this or perhaps you've already heard about it, but today I learned something very scary about my smartphone: scammers, perverts and all-around nutjobs can see your location from your PHONE PICTURES!

It has to do with the GPS tracking on your phone, which puts an invisible tag on your pics and lets unsavory types find out where you live, where your kids go to school, etc.

I don't know about you, but that scares the bejeebers outta me!

So, as soon as I read the email from my husband and watched the YouTube video he linked to, I turned off the GPS on my Droid until I could figure out how to turn it off just for pics.

I did figure it out and thought I'd share the Android instructions with all of you:

  • First, go to your camera.
  • Push your "menu" button (it's to the far left on my Droid X)
  • Touch "tags"
  • Touch "Auto Location Tag"

That should do it.  Double-check that it is turned off before you take pictures.  On my Droid X there is a little picture of a "tag" in the upper left corner if it is turned on.

If you know how to turn it off on other smartphones, please post the instructions in the comments.

We can NEVER be too safe where our kids are concerned.

I welcome your thoughts and respectful comments!
