Food, Treasures and Tag-a-longs - That's the Scratch!

Things to do in Bolingbrook over the summer, adventure in the woods, and other useful information.

What a weekend we had!

So many things were happening: the Taste of Bolingbrook, beautiful geo-caching weather and bringing home “unknown” tag-a-longs from the woods.

Yes, indeed, it was a great weekend for adventures! The Taste of Bolingbrook was in full swing and many got their fill of all sorts of goodies from around town. The geo-cachers were out in full force searching for hidden treasure and getting in touch with their pirate sides. And, in the midst of all the excitement, we brought home an unknown visitor.

My human companion was unfortunately the victim of a tick bite. Now, for those of who have never been unfortunate enough to get bitten, let me just say, it was a hair raising, or shall I say a rather feather raising experience!

When you go into the woods, be sure to be aware of your surroundings. Even the most seasoned outdoorsmen can find themselves in a tick bite situation. If this does happen, do not panic and starting running around like a chicken with your head cut-off. This will only cause the situation to become more dramatic than it needs to be. And while I enjoy a good dramatic scene when called for, this is not one of those situations in which you want to see a chicken lose his nuggets! Remember to take a breath, smooth out your feathers and take the rational steps needed in order to correct the situation.

The following website has information on the proper way of removing a tick and the treatment afterward. This does not replace the need to contact your medical provider; it is merely to share information with you.

While being surprised by uninvited guests is no picnic, do not let it hinder your adventurous spirit. In fact, it can sometimes even be more educational for you when you realize what you are truly capable of accomplishing.

If you are still looking for ways to enjoy the summer then why not join a community team or Scouts? Both are educational and help you meet new people and make new friends. And you will learn skills for a lifetime along the way. And for those adults in need of ideas for summer fun, the same applies to you. Check out the local park district for ideas. Here is the website for the Bolingbrook Park District. They have some great up coming events, including some free ones! So be sure to check them out.

All you have to do is make the decision to find your adventure. In fact even this chicken learned how to use a compass. So now, I won’t get lost following my beak! Let’s face it chickens are not exactly known for their sense of direction. I mean come on, why do you think chickens are always trying to cross the road? It’s because they think the other side will give them a better of view of where they came from rather than where they are going! And while it is important to remember where you came from, it is equally as important to see where you are going. And learning to read a compass will help point you in the right direction! And that’s the scratch!
