The Knitty-Bitty Club = Summer Fun
The Fountaindale Public Library in Bolingbrook is offering a free class that will teach you the basic skills needed to knit or crochet items that you will be proud to say "I made it myself".
Have you ever wanted to learn how to knit or crochet? Now's your chance to receive free lessons from talented hobbyists, eager to share their skills. The is hosting it's summer session of The Knitty-Bitty Club at 10 a.m. starting Wednesday, June 27, in Meeting Room-A. I'll be one of the teachers, along with several other women from the Library's Weekly Knitters and Crocheters Nest Drop-In group. Registration begins this week, and there will be openings for 10 adults and 10 children.
I've been knitting for over 50 years, but hadn't picked up my needles for a long while. Last fall I joined the Library's Knitter's and Crocheter's Nest and I've been hooked ever since. There will be four weekly sessons of 90 minutes each, skipping the July 4th holiday. It doesn't matter if you're a man or a woman, a boy or a girl, a righty or a lefty, anyone can learn to be an avid knitter, or crocheter with our help.
Years ago, I remember browsing through knitting books, and finding the perfect pattern, then spending a lot of money on it, even though I didn't really like any of the other patterns. Things have really changed for the better. Now there are thousands of cool patterns to download online. Many are free, and perfect for beginners.

I've joined an online group called Ravelry https://www.ravelry.com open to all knitters and crocheters. It's a wonderful site that helps you find all about yarns, patterns, techniques, accessories, and other members. Want to make a poncho? They show hundreds of pictures of handmade ponchos, with details like where they got the pattern, and the exact yarns they used. Teens want to make trendy items like legwarmers, cowls, shrugs, and tank tops, not granny square throws. We can teach you how to make your own dream wardrobe, if you stick with it.
I have pages of new projects that I feel confident in making, because I know if I run into anything tricky, there will be friends at our weekly drop-in who will be glad to offer assistance and help me figure it out.

My brother, Todd has been knitting for over 20 years. He specializes in Scandinavian Folk patterns, and creates his own designs. The intricate patterns and colors are mind boggling. My Mom gave him lessons when he was in his 30's. He loves working with tiny needles, and fine yarns. I, on the other hand, prefer using larger-size circular needles, and irregular yarns that create interesting textures, such as fuzzy eyelash yarns.
I love the flexibility of being able to take my knitting along with me everywhere. I can sit outside and knit while relaxing on the deck, commuting on the train, while waiting for an appointment, or even during lunch breaks. Since my renewed passion for knitting began last fall, I have lost 20 lbs. because it keeps me from snacking while I watch TV. An added bonus!
These pictures are just some of my creations that I have knitted since I joined the Nest.
