The Path Less Traveled—That's the Scratch!

Sometimes in life you find yourself at a crossroads and you are not sure which way to turn.

Should you choose the well traveled path? The one with the perfectly manicured lawns, cookie cutter houses and white picket fences looks so inviting.

And yet the other path is barely worn, overgrown with weeds and brambles, long since been traveled upon and appears to be quite frightening. So much so that this chicken gets chicken bumps just thinking about it. Shiver me feathers for sure.

And yet you find yourself wondering, what both paths might be like.

Surely the more inviting path would bring untold joy and comfort. Everything you always wanted on display right in front of you, ready for you to grab a hold and claim as your own. Most chickens I know choose that very path. They cluck and flutter all about telling of how much they have and how blessed they are to have found such riches. Seduced by the glow of the “treasure” they always wanted and hoped for.

And yet all too often those same chickens discover that all that glitters is not gold. Nor is it true treasure. Sure it makes you smile, and fills you with pride to have been blessed enough to have these things. And yes these things are very comfortable and very inviting. But, I have discovered that they do not fill me in the way most chickens believe they would.

After all material comforts are just that, material. Now don’t get me wrong, who doesn’t want to live the dream of the big house, nice car, and money galore? But, those things while nice are not true treasures.

As I have grown from a young chick to a more mature chicken, I have begun to realize the joy is in the journey. It is not in the amount of things one has. I have discovered that the less traveled path is full of adventures that I could have never dreamed of. This chicken has learned that not all who wander are lost. I have learned that those who wander have actually found their selves and that those who do not, are still searching for the next “treasure” to fill the void.

So, this chicken is glad for taking the more frightening and less traveled path. While there were hardships, the lessons learned far out weigh those growing pains. And while I have lost many feathers to the challenges before me, and had many tell me I was running around like a chicken with my head cut off, and had others still tell me that I must not wander off the path, I still am glad I did.

I have learned what real strength is. I have discovered perseverance inside myself. And I have discovered a peace I never knew was possible.

So instead of searching for treasures to hold onto, why not take the chance to discover the treasures that are worth keeping. Wander onto the path less traveled and discover the adventures of your own life’s journey.

As I look ahead and see the crossroads of my life, I look back and see how far I have come and realize how much farther I have yet to go. Time for this chicken to once again cross the road and head for the path less traveled. And I cannot wait for the treasures I will find.

And that’s the scratch!
