Coronavirus has you sick...of each other?

We all have to admit that the time we have spent in quarantine/self-isolation/staying at home has been difficult.

Anxiety. Homeschooling and remote learning. Wine. Wearing masks. More wine. Zoom meetings. Reduced income. No income. More anxiety. Unable to leave your house. Running out of wine. Bored kids. Lack of sleep. Mounting bills. Vodka. Cabin fever. Tax relief does not come through. Tequila shot.

And then the truth strikes: your marriage is not as solid as you once thought. As a matter of fact, you’ve come to a rude awakening: you actually can’t stand your spouse and you want out. You’re done! You’ve known it for a long time, this pandemic has just made it more real than ever. It’s not a matter of working things out or the stress of the situation. There were other red flags along the way, you have just had more time than ever to understand the reality that it’s not going to get better.

So, what do you do now? Stay calm and call an experienced divorce attorney.

While you may think that you are doomed, and you need to stay in a loveless marriage for the remainder of the quarantine, or at least until the shelter-in-place orders are lifted, the reality is that many of our State’s domestic relations courts are working “as normally” as possible. For example, in most counties your attorney is able to file a petition for dissolution of marriage, request child support, maintenance (alimony) or allocation of parental responsibilities and parenting time (custody and visitation) through the e-filing website and schedule a hearing date, which will likely happen via some remote mean like Zoom. In other more pressing instances, emergency petitions can be filed if you or your children are being subjected to physical or emotional harm, or if your Ex is abusing a parenting time judgment or not complying with a court order, and the Court will hear those petitions on an expedited basis.
