On Wednesday afternoon, the Illinois State Police released a more thorough explanation of the incident.

Their preliminary investigation indicated that both Herrera and the vehicle which struck him were traveling north on I-55 at Woodward Avenue in the left lane shortly before 7 p.m. For unknown reasons, Herrera veered off the roadway and crashed into the concrete barrier wall to the left. Another vehicle driven by a 30-year-old Bolingbrook woman struck Herrera; the impact caused his car to roll over and come to a rest on its roof.

Herrera suffered injuries that eventually proved fatal, but the younger Bolingbrook resident only suffered non-life threatening injuries. All northbound lanes near the crash scene were closed until shortly after midnight.

No other people were in the cars when the vehicles collided, and no charges have yet been filed against the Bolingbrook driver.
