Found it on Etsy: Earthenware Clay 'Red Fish Dish'

A local woman’s passion for firing clay burns brightly in her “Red Fish Dish” and I Found it Etsy.

The piece—handmade by Joliet’s Lori Mehan—is selling for $50. Mehan is the owner of LoriMehanCeramics and she joined Etsy in May 2012.

“I have worked with clay my whole life,” she says in her Etsy profile. “I take no shortcuts or a path of least resistance. Each piece is one of a kind. Handbuilt and handpainted, some fired multiple times.

“All functional items are food-safe and airtight to be used as well as looked at. Always evolving and changing so mostly do a series and then move on to something different. Painted with underglazes, which require many coats and then a food-safe overglaze.”

Mehan says her favorite materials to work with are earthenware clay, glazes, underglazes and metallic lusters. She describes her “Red Fish Dish” like this:

“This piece is made from a slab of earthenware clay and hand-painted with layers of underglaze and then glazed with a food-safe clear glaze. The piece is painted on both sides and has a wire loop so that it can be hung on the wall. Hand wash, no micro oven.”

The “Red Fish Dish” measures 8x2x6½.
