Mary Alexander-Basta Again Honored for Volunteerism, Service

Mary Alexander-Basta, a Bolingbrook resident and parent volunteer in Plainfield School District 202, was recognized for her volunteerism and service to the students and schools at a dinner on March 21, 2019, by C.A.P.E., the committee for the Coordination of Administration and Parents Groups for Educational Efficiency. C.A.P.E. provides a direct connection to district administration, staff and elected officials for parents, taxpayers and community leaders. The organization also serves as a forum for an open exchange of information, ideas and questions between each school's parent group and district leaders.

CAPE is comprised of district administrators, building principals, representatives of each school parent group, District 202 Board of Education members and district liaison officers. CAPE was established 43 years ago, to allow parent groups and administrators to share concerns and ideas to promote unity throughout District 202. Each year during the CAPE awards ceremony, District 202 school’s honor individuals who have exhibited outstanding commitment to both their school and their community.

Each year schools in the district choose a recipient in three categories - Certified Staff Member, Support Staff Member, and Parent Volunteer. The recipients are nominated and voted on by the Teachers, Staff, and Parents and are not eligible to win two years in a row. Basta has received the C.A.P.E. award in 2013, 2017, and 2019.

“I am truly humbled by the recognition”, said Basta. “We have a team of incredible staff and volunteer parents who consistently strive to improve the lives of our students and being chosen by the C.A.P.E. organization makes me very proud to be involved with this team.”

Basta was asked last year to run for elected office as a Village Trustee in Bolingbrook in the April 2 Consolidated election, her first ever run for public office. Basta’s running mates are Sheldon Watts and Michael Carpanzano. Watts was appointed to replace long time Deputy Mayor Leroy Brown, who passed away in 2017. Carpanzano is also a first time candidate for office. Basta commented, “I feel my service to the school district has prepared me well for serving the residents of Bolingbrook and serving as a Trustee will allow me to make a difference in more of my community.”
