Obituary: David Lewis

Known as "Mr. Music," David's knowledge, professionalism, and love for the industry left a lasting impression.

David Lewis

David Lewis, originally of St. Louis, Missouri, passed away peacefully on June 10, 2026 at the age of 83. Born on April 1, 1943, David was the beloved son of the late William and Norma (Nee Hise) Lewis. On May 16, 1964, David married Sandra Vivirito, in St. Louis, Missouri. Together they shared 62 years of marriage, building a life centered on love, family, and music.

A proud graduate of Cleveland High School, Class of 1962 David turned his lifelong passion for music into a distinguished career spanning several decades. He began as a piano tuner with the Baldwin Piano Company before running his own piano rebuilding and repair shop. His expertise led him into piano manufacturing, sales, and marketing, where he worked with respected companies including Baldwin, Kimball, and Conn Organ Company. Throughout his career, he traveled extensively, building relationships and earning awards and recognitions for his performance. Known as “Mr. Music,” David's knowledge, professionalism, and love for the industry left a lasting impression.

Music was not simply David’s profession—it was his passion. An accomplished musician, he played the piano, saxophone, and vibraphone and was a devoted admirer of jazz music throughout his life. He was also a proud member of the Elks Club, American Legion, and Knights of Columbus.

David is survived by his beloved wife of 62 years, Sandra Lewis; his loving son, Daniel Lewis; his granddaughter, Kennedie Lewis; his grandson, Greyson Ahearn; Kimberly Lewis; and his caregivers, Germany Couch and Nicholetta Kubina.

He was preceded in death by his parents, William and Norma Lewis; his son, David Lewis; and his granddaughter, Danielle Lewis.

David was known for his generosity, quick sense of humor and ability to make everyone around him feel welcome. Above all, David was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, and friend. David leaves behind a legacy of music, dedication, and joyful memories that will continue to inspire all who knew him. Though he will be deeply missed, his spirit will live on in the hearts of his family and friends and in the music that brought him so much happiness throughout his life.

The family wishes to extend their heartfelt gratitude to the caregivers, friends, and medical professionals who provided David with care, and companionship throughout his journey. His memory will forever remain a blessing to all who had the privilege of knowing him.

Visitation services for David Lewis will be held on Sunday, June 28, 2026 from 1:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m. at Fred C. Dames Funeral Home, 3200 Black Road, Joliet, Illinois.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made in his name to Lightways Hospice and Serious Illness Care, 250 Water Stone Circle, Joliet, Illinois 60431.
