PART #1 - After our success in the parade it was decided that every good yacht club has an annual regatta. The only problems were that there is no navigable water in our lovely village, our members thought that water was good as a mixer, and that water causes rust. So the rules for Cornfield sailing were laid out. Vessels must be at least 6 ft long, 3 foot wide, 6 ft tall including the mast and weigh less than 20,000 lbs. There must be at least 6 crew members and the would carry their yacht through an obstacle course scoring points for construction, speed, agility and bribery. Of course the winner of the "Fabulous Flying Flamingo" trophy, a large aluminum bowl nailed to a 4 foot high pink 4x4 with a plywood base, would determined by totaling their points and adding the "Rule 8" factor. "Rule 8" said "All decisions will be made, all arguments will be settled, all prizes will be awarded by the Commodore, no matter how stupid, capricious or misguided these decisions might seem." The stage was set, the rules were written, the judges selected, the "T" shirts printed; all that remained was to see if there were any groups willing to participate. We really had no idea what we were in for. Part 2 to follow soon.
