VVSD Holds Three Parent Events In September

The events will include discussions of teenage depression, as well as a presentation about strategies to help kids manage emotions.

BOLINGBROOK, IL — Valley View School District will hold three parent events in September, in an effort to cultivate a welcome learning environment for families and support relationships between the community and the district.

The first event will be held at 6 p.m. on Sept. 7 at A. Vito Martinez Middle School, according to the district. "The 10 Secrets to Create a Powerful Family" with Dr. Ferney Ramirez is presented by the VVSD Bilingual Parent Committee. The presentation will be in Spanish.

A second event, which will be held as a webinar, will discuss "More Than Moody: Suicide, Let's Talk About It," with Dr. Harold Koplewicz. According to the district, Koplewicz will discuss teenage depression and how to recognize the difference between normal teenage angst, anger, disappointment, sadness, and true depression.

This webinar is provided to you by VVSD, in partnership with Glenbard Parent Series. Two sessions are available: from noon to 1 p.m. on Sept. 21 and from 7 to 8 p.m. on Sept. 21. You can register online.

The last parent event will be held Sept. 22 at 6 p.m. at Brooks Middle School, according to the district. "Practical and Mindful Regulation Strategies to Help Children Manage Emotions," with Dr. Vickie Trotter will discuss tips for helping kids improve their self-regulation skills when they need help to control emotions, handle frustration and resist impulsive behavior.
