Double Door Kicked Out of Longtime Wicker Park Location

This isn't the first time the rock club was forced out of the space it has called home for more than 2 decades.

CHICAGO, IL — After an ongoing lease battle, the Double Door rock venue finally has been evicted from the Wicker Park location the popular nightspot has had for more than two decades, according to DNAinfo.com.

A "No Trespassing" sign was posted to the door of the club at about 11:30 a.m. Monday, Feb. 6, by the Cook County Sheriff's Office, and the locks also were changed, the report stated. Double Door had operated from its location at 1572 N. Milwaukee Ave., for 23 years.

As of 1:30 p.m. Monday, Feb. 6, Double Door's website still listed shows for that day and future dates, and the last update on the club's Facebook page, dated Sunday, Feb. 5, touted ticket sales for upcoming shows in March. About an hour after the "No Trespassing" sign was posted at the club, a message about tickets for a March 8 show was posted on Double Door's Twitter account.

Double Door co-owner Sean Mulroney and landlord Brian Strauss have been battling over the Wicker Park space since the club's original lease expired in October of 2015. Strauss moved to have the club evicted a month after the lease ran out, claiming Mulroney didn't give him the necessary 180-day notice to extend the agreement.

In July of 2016, a judge ordered the Double Door to leave the Milwaukee Avenue building by the end of the year. But that judge then ruled in November that the club could stay at its location past the Dec. 31 deadline while the owner appealed the previous order so long as the $26,000 rent was paid each month, the Chicago Tribune reported at the time.

After the July order, Mulroney and co-owner Joe Shanahan began considering moving Double Door to Logan Square, DNAinfo reported at the time.
