HARRINGTON ANNOUNCES WINNERS OF STUDENT DESIGN COMPETITION WITH KLISE MANUFACTURING
Harrington College of Design recently teamed up with Klise Manufacturing to host "Competition Studio," a design competition for students.
Harrington College of Design recently teamed up with Klise Manufacturing, a leader in the wood industry, to host “Competition Studio,” a design competition where students were exposed to a hypothetical ‘real world’ design problem. On Thursday, February 12th the winners were announced and included Kefira White (1st place), Goeun Kim (2nd place) and Jordan Fons (honorable mention).
Led by class instructor John Kelley, each student received parameters for a space and was required to submit a single room design for a luxury hotel bar/restaurant by creating a “trim package” using either existing design patterns from Klise’s custom design catalog or creating new lineal wood profiles or metalwork designs. Additionally, six of seven decorative product applications were required to be used for each room design which included: 1) crown & frieze moulding/decorative crown insert, 2) decorative chair rail moulding, 3) panel moulding, casing, etc. 4) wire mesh grillework for cabinetry, furniture or room accents, 5) post/turning, 6) base cap & shoe moulding, 7) miscellaneous design elements (rosettes, embossed ornaments, wire brackets, etc.).
“This year’s student design challenge at Harrington was one of the most memorable competitions I’ve been involved in. The students’ level of enthusiasm, creativity and attention to detail far surpassed anything I had anticipated,” explains Phil Tomasello, National Sales Manager, Klise Manufacturing.

“This was a first time partnership between Harrington and Klise and we are looking forward to working with them for future projects with our students,” adds Max S. Shangle, President, Harrington College of Design.
“I was very impressed that the design program for this competition was based on a possible real world scenario,” adds Mark Allen Garzon of MLGM Architects who designed the project. “Overall, the students created evocative and realistic solutions especially given the abbreviated project timeline and extensive program requirements and I think that speaks highly not only of the professors involved, but also of the overall quality of the Harrington College design program.”
