Tigers Sprint to Early Lead; Hang on Late for Conference Win

Bursting on the scene with a 23 to 7 first quarter run, Holy Trinity (13-6 overall; 3-2 in the Chicago Prep) looked to have matters in control versus CPC conference foe Ida Crown Wednesday (Jan. 27th) IN THE JUNGLE!
But the visiting Aces (3-11) took a deep breath after one quarter of play and slowly and methodically cut into that 16 point deficit to make the remainder of this contest interesting to say the least!
Holy Trinity had established their early lead via a trapping press and the willingness to run the floor. But Ida Crown responded by setting up their half-court offense, and by halftime the 16-point margin had shrunk to just 11.

It was a striking turn of events for the Tigers who found themselves first on top of the world with a commanding lead, and in just minutes, on their heels and the Aces gaining momentum.
“Our plan coming out of the gate was to run and pressure them,” commented Tiger head coach Ray Kang afterwards. “Early on this worked quite well. But our hats are off to them (Ida Crown). Their answer to our early scoring success was right on the money!.”

SECOND HALF NIP-AND-TUCK:
As the second half started, Ida Crown got a three-point play from Ethon Frank (18 points on the night) who then followed with another driving basket at 6:38 of the third to cut the Tiger lead to six at 39-33.
HT’s Justin Robinson (10 points prior to fouling out early in the 4th quarter) hit a short jumper and with 6:15 to go in the third the Tigers seemed to quell yet another Aces’ rush.
Each team garnered 10 points in the third stanza and the score stood at 49-38 in the Tigers favor with eight minutes to play.
But Ida Crown wasn’t finished just yet.
The Aces then proceeded to outscore HT 21-13 in the final quarter, closing to 56-53 with 2:06 left.
Then HT’s Marlon Caston (overall leading scorer for both teams on the night with 20) hit six of nine free throws down the stretch and the Tigers ESCAPED! with an ugly but important 62-59 win.
Other than Caston and Robinson, Holy Trinity saw important contributions from Adrian Santiago (14 points) and Christian Camarillo (12).
Along with Frank’s 18, the Aces featured 11 points from Isaac Golston and 10 from Daniel Otoni.
NO REST
There’s NO BREAK in the ACTION for Holy Trinity, as Thursday evening the Tigers travel to Deerfield for yet another CPC conference match-up versus Rochelle-Zell.
Varsity tip-off is set for 7pm.
