HT GBK: Char Szumilas, Holy Trinity Thanksgiving Tourney

The HT Lady Tigers (2-1 overall) and ITW Speer were both victorious in day 2 action at the Char Szumilas/HT Thanksgiving classic held at Holy Trinity high school.
GAME ONE from Saturday, November 18:
ITW Speer 40, Cristo Rey 19:
ITW sprinted to a 36-7 halftime lead over Cristo Rey and finished the contest clearing their bench en route to their 40-19 win.
Cristo Rey did outscore the Pride in the second half 12 to 4 but the damage was done thru the first sixteen minutes of play.
The Cristeras were led by Daphne Hernandez with seven points. Teammate Natalie Flores added 3.
For the Pride of ITW, Nyah Daniels had a game-high 15 points with that total coming in the first half of play while teammate Mia Harris added 14.

Game 2 from November 18:
Holy Trinity 25, UIC Prep 22:
In the nightcap, in a much tigher affair, the Lady Tigers of Holy Trinity prevailed late, turning back UIC Prep by a final of 25-22.
With the win, HT has the opportunity to capture their own tourney title Monday evening when they will face ITW Speer at 6:45pm..
In Saturday's game, the Tigers and UIC struggled to garner points in the first eight minutes of play, as UIC led by one at 3-2.
In the second quarter the Tigers regained the lead and by halftime held a three point margin at 10-7. This was accomplished on HT baskets made by Jada White, Star Brooks and Sakayah Garity, while teammate Cece Garner bagged two free throws.
But UIC regained the lead after three quarters, moving ahead 17-15 with V. Galindo hitting a trey and another bucket, while HT's White countered with 2 field goals made.
In the final stanza, UIC's L. Willis hit a field goal with 5:51 to go to allow UIC to move to an 18-16 advantage.
But the Tigers Kristina Vargas drove solo for two straight buckets and with 2:45 to play HT held a one point lead at 20-19.
Brooks then connected on a field goal at 2:27 for HT and it was 22-18 in favor of the home team.
In the last seconds of play, HT's Fatima Olaitan hit a crucial free throw with only 19 on the clock and HT led 23-20. But UIC's L. Gumenez countered two seconds later with two charity throws of her own and it was again a one-point game at 23-22 HT with 15 to go.
Then HT's White put the game away with two free throws with 13 seconds left and the Lady Tigers survived a final three-point attempt by UIC's Brunson with only 3 to go to take the game by a final of 25-22.
Leading scorers for HT were White with eight points while teammate Vargas added 6 and Brooks added four.
UIC featured V. Galindo with seven points and L. Gumenez who added five and L. Willis who had four on the day.
