Man Charged With Arson After Church Break-In: Police

Raymond Luna, 28, is accused of intentionally setting a Northwest side church on fire early Monday.

CHICAGO, IL — A Northwest side man is accused of breaking in to a church in the Belmont Cragin neighborhood and intentionally setting it on fire early Monday morning, according to police.

Raymond Luna, 28, of the 2100 block of North Lorel Avenue, was charged with two counts of aggravated arson in connection with the incident, police said.

Officers responded to a call of a burglary in process at about 12:14 a.m. Monday, Oct. 24, in the 4800 block of West Altgeld Street. When police arrived at the scene, they reported seeing Luna leaving the church through a rear window. Officers also saw smoke coming from the building at that time.

Police apprehended Luna at the scene, according to the report. Crews from the Chicago Fire Department were able to put out the fire with minimal damage done to the church.
