Teens Steal SUV With Boy In Back, Tell Him To Enjoy School When They Drop Him Off

The 10-year-old was waiting for his parents in the vehicle Tuesday when two teenagers jumped inside and unknowingly drove off with him.

CHICAGO, IL — Teenage car theives looking to heist a parked SUV with its engine running Tuesday morning on the Northwest side found a surprise in the backseat: a 10-year-old boy.

Fortunately, the boy was dropped off in an alley near his Hermosa home by the carjackers, who told him to have a good day at school, according to WGN-TV News. He was returned unharmed to his parents, the report added.

The incident began before 6 a.m. Tuesday, Jan. 24, near Arimitage and Kildare avenues, after the boy got into his parents' Buick Rendezvous to go to school and started the SUV's engine, the report stated. The boy then popped in the backseat to wait.

But instead of the boys' parents, two teenagers — a boy and a girl — hopped in the front seat and drove off, apparently unaware of their third passenger, the report stated. Initially, the boy thought it was his mom behind the wheel, but the erratic driving quickly tipped him off.

"I don’t think they even know how to drive, because when they were driving really fast, they were hitting a lot of cars and posts," the boy told the Chicago Tribune.

Eventually, the car thieves caught sight of the boy in the backseat.

"After they turned, they said a bad word and then they said, 'Oh my God, there's a kid over here,'" the boy told WGN-TV. "And they told me, 'Get off, get off.'"

The carjackers released the boy four blocks from his house and, spying his backpack, wished him well at school, the report stated. The boy made it home after someone saw him in the alley and contacted his parents, the report added.

No one has been taken into custody in the case, and the SUV is still missing.
