THE BODY ELECTRIC ON THE MAT:
Local Businesses Collaborate to Bring the Science of Movement to a Safer Yoga Practice
Wicker Park/Bucktown’s Eb & flow Yoga Studio and Lakeview’s Lakeshore Sports Physical Therapy are jointly offering a workshop on Saturday, September 28, 2013 that combines traditional yoga practice with biomechanics. Biomechanics can help to promote safety in anyone’s practice, including instructors.
Biomechanics is the application of mechanics—or the science of how objects move in relation to other objects and forces—to studying biological organisms. The arms and legs become levers, the knees and elbows become bearing surfaces and articulations, the muscles become motors and springs, and the organs become power supplies. Biomechanics can help people better understand the relationships among their organs, muscles, bones, and joints, and develop and apply safe techniques in positioning their bodies in their practice.
Chiropractor and yoga teacher Tova Sklar and orthopedic physical therapist Angela Wilson Penni of Lakeshore Sports Physical Therapy are both experts in biomechanics and kinesiology. Together, they will lead the September 28th workshop at Eb & flow Yoga Studio.
“I have applied my understanding of the human body and movement as a physical therapist to my yoga practice,” Tova explains. “This understanding has helped me greatly advance my own practice.”
Eb & flow wants to share what they have learned about biomechanics from Tova with others throughout the Chicagoland yoga community in a special workshop at their studio. The workshop takes place on Saturday, September 28th, from 1 to 3 PM. Participation is free for Eb & flow members and $30 for non-members ($25 with advance registration at www.ebandflowyoga.com).
