2 Buffalo Grove Students Named National Merit Scholarship Winners

The students are among 3,000 winners from across the United States announced Wednesday.

BUFFALO GROVE, IL — The National Merit Scholarship Corporation, based in Evanston, announced over 3,000 winners from across the United States of National Merit Scholarships. The awards provide between $500 and $2,000 annually for up to four years of undergraduate study at the institution financing the scholarship.

Local winners from Buffalo Grove include:

  • Andrew M. Hoang, of Buffalo Grove, Buffalo Grove High School. University of Central Florida. Probable career field: computer programming.
  • Benjamin D. Prins, of Buffalo Grove, Adlai E. Stevenson High School (Lincolnshire). University of Central Florida. Probable career field: computer science.

An additional group of scholars will be announced in July, according to a news release. That will bring the total number of college-sponsored Merit Scholarship recipients in the 2023 competition to more than 3,800.

For 2023, 153 higher education institutions are underwriting Merit Scholarship awards through the National Merit Scholarship Program. Sponsor colleges and universities include 81 private and 72 public institutions located in 42 states and the District of Columbia.

High school juniors entered the 2023 National Merit Scholarship Program when they took
the 2021 Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test (PSAT/NMSQT), which
serves as an initial screen of program entrants, according to the news release.
