8 Buffalo Grove Students Named 2023 National Merit Scholarship Winners

The designees were chosen from a talent pool of more than 15,000 finalists.

BUFFALO GROVE, IL — Eight Buffalo Grove students were part of a group of 7,200 high school seniors recently announced as National Merit scholarship winners. The scholarships are financed by U.S. colleges and universities.

Winners are picked based on results from the preliminary SAT, roles in school and extracurricular activities, a recommendation from a school official and a student essay, according to a news release from the National Merit Scholarship Corporation, based in Evanston.

The Buffalo Grove winners of $2,500 are:

  • Gautham Kappaganthula, who is pursuing a probable career field of engineering, is a student at Adlai E. Stevenson High School in Lincolnshire
  • Nathan J. Ma, who is pursuing a probable career field of statistics, is a student at Adlai E. Stevenson High School in Lincolnshire
  • Subham Mitra, who is pursuing a probable career field of computer science, is a student at Adlai E. Stevenson High School in Lincolnshire
  • Vaishnavi Sankar, who is pursuing a probable career field of law, is a student at Adlai E. Stevenson High School in Lincolnshire
  • Daron L. Sun, who is pursuing a probable career field of computer engineering, is a student at Adlai E. Stevenson High School in Lincolnshire
  • Ann Thomas, who is pursuing a probable career field of medicine, is a student at Adlai E. Stevenson High School in Lincolnshire
  • Andrey Vlasov, who is pursuing a probable career field of mathematics, is a student at Adlai E. Stevenson High School in Lincolnshire
  • Audrey X. Yang, who is pursuing a probable career field of fine arts, is a student at Adlai E. Stevenson High School in Lincolnshire

The cash scholarships are the second of four rounds of annual scholarship winner announcements. Last month, National Merit representatives announced about 840 winners of corporate sponsored-scholarships.
