BUFFALO GROVE, IL — Next month will be bittersweet for the Buffalo Grove Symphonic Band as it celebrates its 25th anniversary with a special concert that will also be the final performance for Howard Green, its conductor and founding music director.
The concert is scheduled for 7 p.m. May 9, at Stevenson High School Performing Arts Center, 1 Stevenson Dr., Lincolnshire. The performance, titled "The Best of 25 Years!," is expected to include classical masterworks, Broadway favorites and contemporary selections, according to the Buffalo Grove Park District.
"Reaching our 25th anniversary is truly special," Green said. "We've built a musical family here — one that includes longtime members, new faces, and audiences who come back year after year. This concert is both a celebration of our history and a look toward the future."
Founded in 2001, the band has grown from a small ensemble into an organization of more than 70 volunteer musicians. The nonprofit community concert band performs throughout the community and region and describes its mission as sharing live music while strengthening the community through performance, collaboration and arts education.
"This band means so much to the people who are part of it," Band President C.J. Schmidt said. "We hope the community will join us for a joyful evening of music and memories."
The anniversary program will include music by Modest Mussorgsky, Leonard Bernstein, Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky and Samuel Barber, along with selections from "Fiddler on the Roof," and "The Producers."
Tickets are $12 at the door, $10 in advance and $8 for students and seniors. Advance tickets are available through band members, at Village Hall or online at vbg.org/bgsbtickets, according to the announcement.
