The update, as reported by the Daily Herald, follows Behnke’s death late Saturday in the 1100 block of Wildberry Court. Wheeling police previously said officers responded at approximately 11:50 p.m. Saturday for a report of a person not breathing. When officers arrived, they found Behnke unresponsive, police said in an earlier statement.

Members of the Wheeling Fire Department provided emergency medical aid before taking him to Glenbrook Hospital, where he was later pronounced dead, police said.

As detectives continued investigating, police said they determined Behnke had sustained physical injuries believed to be consistent with a domestic incident before his death. At the time, police said a person of interest had been taken into custody.

That person has since been released without charges, the Daily Herald reported Wednesday. Patch has reached out to Wheeling police for additional information.

Investigators have said they believe the incident was isolated and that there is no threat to the community.

The investigation remains active and is being conducted by the Wheeling Police Department in coordination with the Cook County Medical Examiner’s Office.

No additional information about the circumstances leading up to Behnke’s injuries or whether charges may still be filed was immediately available.

Anyone with information related to the investigation is asked to contact the Wheeling Police Department Investigations Division at 847-459-2690.
