Buffalo Grove Police Step Up DUI, Seat Belt Enforcement For Labor Day

Officers will join a statewide campaign targeting impaired driving, seat belt violations and other dangerous driving behaviors.

BUFFALO GROVE, IL — Police are increasing traffic enforcement through Labor Day as part of a statewide campaign targeting impaired driving, seat belt violations and other dangerous driving behaviors.

The Buffalo Grove Police Department is among more than 200 Illinois law enforcement agencies participating in the "Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over," "Drive High Get a DUI" and "Click It or Ticket" campaigns.

The local enforcement effort runs from Aug. 15 through Sept. 2.

"Driving under the influence — whether it's alcohol, cannabis or any impairing drug — is not just risky, it's illegal," Sgt. Meghan Hansen said. "We'll be patrolling with zero tolerance for impaired driving, because our goal is to protect the people of Buffalo Grove."

Seat Belts, Cannabis Also A Focus

Police said officers will also be watching for seat belt violations as part of the "Click It or Ticket" campaign.

The department is urging everyone in a vehicle — including passengers in the back seat — to buckle up on every trip.

Officers will also be looking for drivers impaired by cannabis and other drugs, not just alcohol.

"We want our community to enjoy the holiday weekend safely and responsibly," Hansen said. "Plan ahead, use a designated driver, and never get behind the wheel impaired. These decisions save lives."

Part Of Statewide Campaign

The enforcement effort is supported by the Illinois Department of Transportation through federal highway safety funding.

IDOT is also running its "It's Not a Game" public awareness campaign across radio, television and digital platforms to emphasize the consequences of impaired driving.
