Police ID Man Killed In Wheeling Hotel Shooting; Gunman Still At Large

WHEELING, IL — Police have identified the 60-year-old Chicago man killed in a shooting outside a Wheeling hotel Sunday night as investigators continue searching for the gunman.

Eddie L. Baker was one of two men shot at about 6:51 p.m. Sunday in the parking lot of the MainStay Suites, 8000 Capital Drive, according to the Wheeling Police Department.

Northwest Central Dispatch received multiple 911 calls reporting the shooting, and responding officers found both men suffering from gunshot wounds in the hotel parking lot.

Baker was taken to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead. The Cook County Medical Examiner's Office later ruled his death a homicide caused by multiple gunshot wounds.

The second victim, a 29-year-old Chicago man, was also taken to a hospital. Police did not provide an updated condition for him.

Police Say Shooting Was Not Random

Detectives believe the shooting was not a random act based on information developed during the investigation, police said.

The gunman was last seen fleeing the parking lot on foot after the shooting. No one was in custody as of the department's latest update.

Despite the gunman remaining at large, investigators said they believe the shooting was an isolated incident and there is no ongoing threat to the public.

Wheeling detectives and members of the Major Case Assistance Team, or MCAT, are reviewing surveillance video and other evidence as the investigation continues.

Police have not released information about what may have led to the shooting or the relationship, if any, between the victims and the gunman.

Investigation Continues

The shooting was initially reported Sunday evening as officers from Wheeling and neighboring departments responded to the MainStay Suites.

Officers provided emergency medical treatment to both victims until Wheeling firefighters arrived. Both men were then transported to the hospital.
