Wheeling High School Closed Tuesday For Emergency Plumbing Repairs

Students and staff are expected back Wednesday as crews replace a decades-old sewer pipe beneath a main hallway.

WHEELING, IL — Wheeling High School will be closed Tuesday as crews continue emergency plumbing repairs that will temporarily block access to portions of the building, Township High School District 214 said.

The repair involves decades-old plumbing beneath a main hallway outside the cafeteria.

District officials said crews have made significant progress while working throughout the weekend and on Labor Day.

As the project moves into its next phase, construction will completely block the front portion of the school and pathways leading to several academic areas, making it impossible to safely move students and staff through the building, according to the district.

Crews need Tuesday to replace the affected sewer pipe, restore the area and allow newly poured concrete to cure before the hallway can safely support normal building access.

The district said the closure is specifically related to building access during the repair work.

Officials said the work is limited to the sewer system and does not affect or create concerns related to the building's air or water quality.

Students and staff are expected to return Wednesday.

Additional work will continue outside the building and will affect normal traffic and drop-off patterns.

Athletic facilities are not affected, and practices and games will continue as scheduled Tuesday.
