Buffalo Grove 3rd Grader Wins National Math Competition

Benji Prins, an 8-year-old student at St. Mary School in Buffalo Grove, finished first in the nation among 3rd graders in the Math Kangaroo mathematics competition.

Benji received a perfect score of 96 points on the 3rd-grade Math Kangaroo test, which is also used as the test for 4th graders in the contest.

This is Benji’s second top-five national finish in the Math Kangaroo competition. Last year, competing as a 2nd grader, Benji finished in fourth place in the United States.

Benji received his award at the Illinois Math Kangaroo awards ceremony on Saturday at the Hyatt Lisle, where he received a medal and a Best Buy gift card.

Over seven million children from more than 50 countries participated in the 2014 international Math Kangaroo competition, including over 16,000 children from the United States.
