Buffalo Grove Residents Charged In Expressway Shooting: Police

An investigation into a January shooting on Route 53 in Palatine led to arrests earlier this week.

BUFFALO GROVE, IL — Two Buffalo Grove men have been charged with attempted murder stemming from an investigation into a January expressway shooting near Palatine. Victor Ponce, 20, and Malik Sutherland, 20, were arrested Tuesday following a two-month investigation.

Both remain behind bars at the Cook County Jail after receiving no bond at detention hearings. They are due back in court on May 3.

According to Illinois State Police, officers responded to Illinois Route 53 and Lake Cook Road in Palatine on Jan. 17 for a report of shots fired. A victim's car was shot by the occupants of a charcoal Honda after a road rage incident that began on Interstate 290. Police said the victim was not injured in the shooting.

During the investigation, ISP recovered evidence from the victim's vehicle, conducted numerous interviews and photo line-ups, and executed several search warrants. Agents were able to identify the suspect vehicle and Sutherland and Ponce as suspects.
