Dog Park Reopens With New Rules

The Happy Tails Dog Park, in Buffalo Grove, had been closed since March 25 due to coronavirus precautions.

BUFFALO GROVE, IL — The Buffalo Grove Park District has reopened the Happy Tails Dog Park, located at 835 Commerce Court, the south end of the parking lot at the Sidney Mathias Metra Train Station.

The dog park was closed on March 25, as a result of the governor’s expanded executive order. Since then though, as the pandemic has evolved, some outdoor facilities and amenities have been able to reopen, including the tennis and pickleball courts, the disc golf courses, and now the dog park.

The additional rules that have been implemented, according to a press release from the Buffalo Grove Park District, include practicing social distancing of at least 6 feet apart, not petting other people’s dogs, and wearing a face mask is recommended. Additionally, for health and safety purposes, the water remains shut off at the facility.

Since all indoor facilities are still closed, prohibiting the Park District from being able to process new dog park permits, the decision has been made to allow all 2019 permits to remain valid until 2020 permits are able to be obtained.

“We had been hearing from many dog owners, wondering when the dog park would reopen,” said Mike Terson, superintendent of communications and marketing, in the press release. “With so many facilities closed, and so many events canceled, it’s nice when we are able to announce some good news, and give people a little bit of normalcy.”
