The Little Things Count in Signage Design

When it comes to designing your signage, don't forget the little things that make a big difference.

The times when you should sweat the small stuff are few and far between, but designing signage is definitely one of them. Great sign design will keep things simple and straightforward, leaving the small things to represent a large portion of the sign’s content. So when it comes to deciding what’s worth agonizing over on your sign, be sure you don’t forget the little things.

Your sign is frequently your first impression. When it comes to new customers, whether they’ve checked you out online or not, your sign is the first thing they’ll see upon arrival. This is an even greater consideration when you take people who have never heard of you into account. You want your sign to provide a clear view of your brand, and seemingly small design elements can go a long way towards accomplishing that.

Color says a lot. Colors affect your sign’s visibility and the way it makes people feel. Obviously, your brand colors take precedence, but you can work other colors into the mix. If your logo features your brand colors, work a complementary color into your sign. This is a great way to add personality to your signage. Font means more than letters. Your font is another extension of your brands personality. A sleek sans serif comes across differently than ornate scripting. Too frequently, businesses default to the safest font without taking time to consider how they can enhance their image. Readability is paramount, but past that you have a lot of freedom to express your company.

When it comes to small business ownership, you can go crazy worrying about every tiny detail. Some small things can make a huge difference, though, especially when it comes to signage. Your signage is a major component in your advertising and your first impression with customers. Spend the time to get all the little things right!
