Man With Guns Flees Cops After Armed Robbery Call: Buffalo Grove PD

Kevin Smith reportedly confronted someone with a shotgun, forcing them into a building, and then left the witness behind.

BUFFALO GROVE, IL — A Buffalo Grove man, who was in possession of several guns, is accused of fleeing police following an initial call of an armed robbery. Kevin Smith, 61, was charged with aggravated assault, unlawful use of a weapon, aggravated unlawful use of a weapon, reckless discharge of a firearm, and was arrested following the early Thursday incident.

Smith is being held by police pending a pre-trial detention hearing set for Friday. The Lake County State's Attorney's Office approved the charges.

At around 12:14 a.m., police were dispatched to the 1300 block of Johnson Drive (Chevy Chase Apartments) for what was initially reported as an armed robbery, but later classified as a man with a gun call.

When police arrived, a witness reported hearing a gunshot and was then confronted by a male with a shotgun immediately after. The male ordered entry into the building and then left the witness behind. A spent shotgun shell was located outside the address by police.

After the witness gave a description of the suspect to police, officers searched the apartment building for him. Police determined the suspect who matched the description was Smith, who also lives at the address. Police contacted Smith, who fled the scene on foot but was apprehended nearby and taken into custody a short time later. Further investigation revealed Mr. Smith was in possession of several weapons and ammunition including a shotgun which were recovered by police. There were no reported injuries or property damage.
