Video Released In Fatal Buffalo Grove Police Shooting

BUFFALO GROVE, IL — The Village of Buffalo Grove released audio and video footage Wednesday of police fatally shooting a man they say was armed with two guns and began firing them after officers arrived. Officials said the footage of the December incident was released to "provide full transparency for the residents of Buffalo Grove."

Brian Christopher Howard, 25, was shot and killed by police during an early morning incident on Dec. 2, 2021, in the area of Radcliffe Road and Boxwood Lane, in a parking lot near a vacant church. The incident marked the first officer-involved shooting ever in Buffalo Grove, according to Police Chief Steven Casstevens.

The video is overlaid with the 911 dispatch as well as police radio audio that transpired during this event. The footage contains graphic images and language, and some viewers may find it to be disturbing or offensive.

That morning, Buffalo Grove police officers responded to a report of a man with a gun in a park. After police arrived, they found Howard, who officials said fired two weapons while advancing toward the officers and repeatedly ignored commands to stop and drop his weapons.

The officers were forced to fire their weapons to stop the threat, according to police accounts of the incident. Despite life-saving efforts by the officers, Howard was pronounced dead at the scene.

Howard's family was given the opportunity to view the video. The Village said it will provide no further comment at this time, pending the conclusion of the investigation by the Lake County Major Crime Task Force and review by the Cook County State's Attorney's Office.
