Regarding the face mask giveaway that happened on Saturday

Today's event calls attention to both a great community and a great need.

Regarding the distribution of masks that happened at the library this afternoon:

Please know that the giveaway was not a library event, nor were any library staff involved.

As we understand it, a few days ago, a member of our community posted an offer of free face masks on the app “Nextdoor.” In the post, he indicated he would distribute them in the parking lot of the Vernon Area Public Library.

It was an incredibly generous offer. And, not surprisingly, many, many people responded appreciatively.

At the time of the giveaway — 3 p.m. today — the number of cars arriving to accept his offer far exceeded the capacity of the library parking lot and even Olde Half Day Road. Traffic backed up onto Route 22 and Milwaukee Avenue. Lincolnshire Police became involved to address the public safety hazard.

Ultimately, the police allowed cars that were already queued in the parking lot to pull through and accept a packet of masks. Those on the street were waved away.

Today’s incident illustrates two important points very clearly:

First, there is an enormous demand for personal protective equipment, not only for healthcare professionals and first responders whose existing supplies are running low, but also the general public, who have been directed to wear masks when leaving home for essential business. We hope that officials see today’s overwhelming response and are able to direct resources accordingly.

Secondly — and most importantly — this selfless gesture reminds us that our community includes some of the most kind, caring, and generous people in the world. We commend this young man for his efforts today. May we all be inspired by his spirit to look for ways to support each other during this trying time.
