SPRINGFIELD, Ill. – State Rep. Carol Sente, D-Vernon Hills, unanimously passed legislation out of the House on Thursday morning aiming to streamline electronics recycling.
“As Vice-Chair of the House Environment Committee and sponsor of a variety of local recycling initiatives, I believe we need to remove unnecessary red-tape that may inhibit recycling opportunities," Sente said. “By making electronics recycling easier for processors, we not only help the industry to expand, but also increase the likelihood that potentially hazardous items will be responsibly disposed."
House Bill 4227 reduces the number of categories Illinois electronics processors must sort and report from 18 to six, putting Illinois in line with other states that have similar electronics waste legislation. It is estimated that this measure, which is supported by both the environmental and business community, could save processors as much as $0.01 per pound or $420,000 a year statewide.
