VERNON HILLS, Ill. – State Rep. Carol Sente, D-Vernon Hills, is leading by example through her decision to return a portion of her salary to taxpayers.
“As a former small business owner, I understand the importance of living within an annual budget, which means eliminating waste and cutting unaffordable costs,” Sente said. “During a time when so many are struggling and the state is crippled with debt, it is not fair for legislators to receive a pay raise. It is for this reason that I supported a budget that only funds lawmakers’ salaries at an amount that includes furlough days and rejects automatic increases for legislators.”
Since becoming State Representative, Sente has taken furlough days that cut her pay annually. After a court decision last year prohibited lawmakers from reducing their pay through furlough days – as Sente has done for four straight years – she has chosen to return any extra salary to the taxpayers.

“Returning this mandated salary increase to the taxpayers is the fiscally responsible decision for all legislators to make,” Sente said. “I am hopeful that upon noticing my actions, that others in the General Assembly will follow by electing to make similar decisions.”
