Spring Planting Guide: Six Tips For A Spectacular View

If you're wanting that bright green grass and those beautiful flowers, you need to start planning now.

By this time of the year, everyone is craving the warmer weather, bright green grass, brilliant sunshine and beautiful flowers. Unfortunately, nothing worth waiting for ever comes easy. That’s why, if you’re wanting that bright green grass and those beautiful flowers, you need to start planning now.

Tips for gardening success:

1. Add the mulch. Chances are that, in order to protect your flower beds you spread mulch before the first frost. Add and spread the mulch around as soon as the snow melts. This allows for an even distribution and room for your perennials to start growing.

2. Plant early. The biggest mistake many burgeoning green thumbs make starting out is planting too late. Spring flowers like pansies can be planted early April after the last frost. Summer flowers should be planted between Mother's Day and Memorial Day.

3. Trim back. Just like a good haircut, trimming your rose bushes and fruit trees early can be just what your plants need to truly thrive. It does away with the old vines and branches, and makes space for the new.

4. Plant with a purpose. Make sure that you’re planting your seeds about an inch beneath damp soil and about four inches apart from the other seedlings. This eliminates overcrowding and over soiling.

5. Create a scene. Your lawn is part of the picture. You can have a beautiful garden, but if it’s surrounded by weed-ridden grass, brown patches and oversized dandelion tufts larger than your flowers, your spectacular garden will be the last thing your neighbors see. Be sure to put just as much care into your landscaping as you do into your peonies.

6. Research. Any good project takes a decent amount of research. From the plants that need sunlight to those that love the shade to annuals that need to be planted early for a little more time to grow. Know what you’re planting or your entire project can be put to waste.

The beautiful gardens that make you wish for summer and the apple trees you love to climb didn’t come easy. They took a lot of work, a considerable amount of effort, an immense amount of time and a fairly good amount of money to maintain.
