Students 'Locked in the Library' explore STEAM

More than 85 fourth and fifth graders from Robert Frost Elementary School spent Friday night ‘Locked in the Library’ to explore a variety of STEAM-based activities (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art and Mathematics) and tackle tough academic questions with their friends. Students made connections to curriculum taught in the classroom through fun and engaging activities.

“Opportunities like these give students a fun and creative way to engage in STEAM activities outside of the school day,” said Kathy Novak, Information Literacy Coach at Frost. “Students couldn’t wait to return to school on a Friday night. The kids had a blast and they learned without even realizing it. Their excitement and energy were contagious!”

Students rotated through four stations and worked together on projects like building bridges that would support toy cars, engineering paper airplanes that could fly the furthest distance and with the most accuracy, and applying mathematical and scientific skills to make ice cream. Each station challenged students to think critically about a specific STEAM problem, while learning collaboration skills by working cooperatively with others.

This was the sixth annual ‘Locked in the Library’ evening at Frost Elementary School. Similar events will be held in April during the Frost Family University Nights. Students and parents will be challenged to work together to address additional STEAM-based activities.
