Tannenbaum's Opposite Field Double Stands Out

Three-sport athlete heads to Northern Illinois University for football next season.

It's the last of three sports for senior Kevin Tannenbaum. From football to basketball and finally in the spring, it's baseball. Tannenbaum patrols first base and bats near the bottom of the Bison lineup.

On Wednesday at home, the southpaw swinging first sacker had his team's first hit of the game. It was a drive to the left field corner that was good for two bags. Tannenbaum wasn't surprised the ball went the other way.

"I can't pull the ball to save my life,'' Tannenbaum said.

Actually, Tannenbaum was very kind to chat after this game. The visiting Vikings of Fremd put a hurt on the Bison to the tune of 12-1 in a game called due to the slaughter rule after five innings.

"Every single ball they hit jumped off their bats," he said. "Those homers were like pop-ups. They just kept on going."

Despite the lopsided defeat, Tannenbaum remains a big fan of his 9-9 Bison team.

"We have a great lineup up and down," he said. "I think we are one of the best hitting lineups around. Today we were just off."

When baseball ends this spring, Tannenbaum will get into football mode for his next adventure at Northern Illinois University.

"They want me as a tight end,'' he said.

Where does this leave baseball, anyway?

"I'll probably play fast-pitch softball,'' Tannenbaum joked.

Recap: Fremd's Kurt Kaufman clocked the game's first homer on Wednesday. Three two-run innings set the tone for a five-run fifth inning that put this game on ice.

"I tip my hat to Fremd,'' said BG coach Jeff Grybash. "They really swung the bats well. When a team comes out like that, they are ready to rock."

BG's lone run of the game came in the second inning. Following Tannenbaum's double, Richie Zirngibl's clutch two-out single chased Tannenbaum home. Jake Monson had the other Bison hit. His single in the fifth gave BG two runners on. The game ended on a line drive double play.
