Teen Carjacker Apprehended Following Car Crash In Long Grove: Sheriff

LONG GROVE, IL — A teenage carjacker remains in custody Saturday following his arrest in Long Grove. According to the Lake County Sheriff's Office, the 19-year-old Cicero resident remains in custody with charges pending.

Police said at around 11:30 a.m. Saturday, a 58-year-old Long Grove woman was pumping gas at a gas station in the 200 block of Robert Parker Coffin Road. As she was finishing pumping the gas, she heard a car crash involving a silver Kia.

The Kia, driven by a 19-year-old, who resides in the 5700 block of West Park Avenue, Cicero, had crashed into a gas pump at the same station. After the crash, the offender reportedly exited his car, which later was determined to be stolen out of Berwyn, and approached the victim, who was entering the driver's seat of her car. He then forcefully removed the victim from her car and attempted to steal her car. The offender then battered the victim, and forcefully removed her from the driver's seat again, and stole the car.

Police said the victim sustained minor injuries.

Soon thereafter, telecommunicators at the LCSO broadcast an emergency regional message regarding the incident. The victim's vehicle was located by Hawthorn Woods police in the area of Old McHenry and Quentin roads, according to police. Police attempted to conduct a traffic stop, but the offender fled the scene. Eventually, the offender crashed the victim's vehicle in the area of Old McHenry Road and Abby Glenn Drive, Hawthorn Woods.

Police said "numerous" deputies from the LCSO responded to the area and located the offender on Route 12 and Old McHenry Road. The offender had allegedly attempted to carjack another vehicle on Route 12, but the driver had his doors locked. Police apprehended the offender and took him into custody without further incident.
