Vernon Area Library closes to help stem community spread of COVID
Officials describe the decision as painful but necessary

Beginning Saturday, March 14, Vernon Area Public Library will be closed until further notice as a preventive measure against COVID-19.
The closure is intended to support community health efforts. There has not been any known exposure involving the library.
The decision to close was based on increasing case counts, evidence of low-level community transmission and closing decisions by many schools, businesses and libraries across the country. Library officials continue to monitor the situation and respond accordingly.

The library’s decision is consistent with neighboring Adlai E. Stevenson High School’s move to remote learning effective Monday, March 16. Vernon Area also follows the example set by other public libraries around the nation. The growing list of local closures includes Northbrook, Highland Park and Oak Park libraries.
“This was a painful decision, but I am confident it is the right one,” said Library Director Cynthia Fuerst. “As a public library, we pride ourselves on being the heart of the community, the place where everyone gathers. And that is precisely why it is best for the library to be closed right now.”
