Vernon Area Library puts 3D printer to work for AMITA Health
Lincolnshire-based library staff pitch in to assist front-line workers through partnership

Vernon Area Public Library staff are working to 3D-print face shield parts for AMITA Health, the Chicagoland hospital system.
AMITA and Reaching Across Illinois Library System (RAILS), a government agency that provides services to libraries in the northern and west-central areas of the state, are working together to coordinate an effort among public libraries, schools, and other public entities with 3D printers to create face shields.
Libraries are making the headbands and reinforcing pieces; AMITA is supplying the clear acrylic face coverings and will assemble the pieces to create the face shields.

The design was chosen by AMITA: the shields can be disinfected and, therefore, reused by medical care personnel. The 3D-printed parts for personal protective equipment (PPE) help alleviate pressure on the healthcare provider's limited supply of disposable face masks.
Vernon Area Public Library remains closed as part of the statewide effort to curb the spread of the COVID-19 virus. The printing is being done remotely.
