Walmart Presence Not Related To Immigration Enforcement: Wheeling PD

The department says it was assisting the Illinois State Police Wednesday in a pre-planned arrest operation.

WHEELING, IL — The Wheeling Police Department confirmed Wednesday its presence at a Walmart store Wednesday was not related to any immigration enforcement activities. Instead, officials say they were assisting Illinois State Police in a pre-planned arrest operation at 1455 Lake Cook Road.

In a social media post, Wheeling police reassured residents of their commitment to operating in full compliance with state laws, including the Illinois SAFE-T Act, the Illinois Trust Act, and the Voices Act. The department also said it does not participate in or assist with Immigration and Customs Enforcement operations.

The department affirmed that there is no ongoing threat to the public following the operation.

"Our priority is transparency and the safety and well-being of all residents and visitors," the post continued

Due to the nature of the event being an active investigation, Wheeling police said that no additional information would be provided at this time, thanking the public for its understanding and cooperation.
