2nd Driver Killed In Fiery Wheeling Crash

The Wheeling Police Department is asking for the public's assistance in locating witnesses to the three-car crash Tuesday night.

WHEELING, IL — Two people, including a 49-year-0ld Inverness woman, were killed Tuesday night in a fiery crash at Lake Cook Road and Northgate Parkway. Brenda L. Felix Soria died at 8:30 p.m. of multiple injuries at Glenbrook Hospital, according to the Cook County Medical Examiner's Office. The identification of the second deceased person - Arthur Matillano, 62, of Buffalo Grove, who died at the scene - was released Wednesday night.

Lake Cook Road, between Milwaukee Avenue and Northgate Parkway, had been closed overnight for the continuing investigation, but reopened Wednesday morning.

The three-car accident occurred at around 7:40 p.m. and was investigated by the Serious Traffic Accident Reconstruction Team of the Northwest Suburban Major Case Assistance Team. The Wheeling Fire Department responded to the crash, which involved extrication. Initially, two cars were found at the scene, with one fully engulfed in flames. Later, a third car was discovered in a nearby tree line.

Preliminary results indicate a car was driving westbound on Lake Cook Road before rear-ending a second vehicle, causing this vehicle to move into the eastbound lanes, where it was struck by a third car, according to the Wheeling Police Department.

In addition to the two people that died as a result of the accident, a third person was hospitalized with serious, but non-life-threatening injuries. There were no passengers in any of the involved cars.
