$2M 'Bank Error' in Burr Ridge's Favor

An accounting mistake means an unexpected upgrade in the village's balance sheet, officials said.

BURR RIDGE, IL – In Monopoly, a "bank error in your favor" is a Community Chest Card that instructs players to collect $200.

It can be a lot more in real life.

At a Village Board meeting, Mayor Gary Grasso reported the state recently sent the village $2 million for "an old accounting error."

"We're still getting more information, but the check cleared, right?" the mayor said.

Village Administrator Evan Walter confirmed it had.

"A bank error in your favor," Walter said.

Grasso said the village would provide more information at the board's Sept. 9 meeting. He said the village is trying to find out more about how the error happened and how to prevent such a situation in the future.

"Somewhere somebody made an error big enough that we got a check for $2 million," Grasso said.

Added the village's attorney, Mike Durkin, "That's better than being on the opposite end."
