Boys Basketball: Hornets Blitz Blazers in Rout

The Hot Read: With a slim 13-12 lead late in the first quarter, Hinsdale South forward Bryson Pitts scores five unanswered points in the last minute to help spark a 22-0 Hornets run that kept the game permanently out of reach for the Blazers. The Hornets led 45-16 at the half and 64-27 after three. Addison Trail did manage to score 24 points in the fourth quarter, but it was too little, far, far too late as the Hornets cruised to their sixth conference win of the season and 15^th overall. 

Patch’s MVP: Hornets guard Phil George scored 17 points. He hit five threes and played exceptional defense in the second quarter, picking up three key steals that helped Hinsdale South build the double-digit lead against the Blazers. 

Key stats: Addison Trail had as many points (16) as they did turnovers in the first half. 11 of them came in the second quarter. The Hornets scored 27 points in the quarter against the Blazers’ four. 

Hinsdale South’s leaders: In addition to George: Brock Benson (12 points, six rebounds, three steals), Andy Nkansah (nine points). 

Addison Trail’s leaders: Armin Trgo (seven points, three steals) and Adam Halick (seven points). 

Quotable: Hornets coach Vince Doran: “They (Addison Trail) are a tough team. We rarely get games like this against them.” 

Records: Hinsdale South: 15-8, 6-4 in WSC Gold Conference Play; Addison Trail: 7-14, 1-8 

What’s next: The Hornets host a makeup game Tuesday against Lyons Township, which was delayed last week because of the snowstorm. The Blazers return home Saturday for a conference game against Morton.
