Ask A Stylist - Ross Bartolomei, Owner, Salon Hype

Are there alternatives to the permanent hair color treatments that contain ammonia?

Q:  I've been coloring my hair for years, and I'm getting increasingly concerned about the chemicals used in permanent hair color products.  It can't be good to be using a product that lists ammonia as a key ingredient.  I don't want to stop coloring my hair, but are there any new product options for those of use wanting to use something with a less harsh laundry list of ingredients?

A:  Great question, and yes, in fact there is a revolutionary new hair color product from L'Oreal Professionel that has been formulated with mineral oil and absolutely no ammonia.  Because there is no ammonia, there's no odor and at most only a minimal burning sensation when applied to the scalp.  Ammonia is also what dehydrates the hair, so now with a mineral oil-based color treatment, your hair will turn out naturally conditioned.  Its a win-win and a first for a permanent hair color.  We are fortunate at Salon Hype to be one of only a handful of salons in Illinois and the only salon in the western suburbs to offer it.  The results are truly amazing.  We've found that hair which has been treated with Inoa is actually smoother, softer and shinier than before it was colored, and that’s because mineral oil is an awesome moisturizer.  It’s a miraculous product and a huge innovation for the industry.   The product line is available in 95 shades that can be mixed to create literally thousands of colors and shades.
